"One child, one teacher, one pen and one book can change the world." ~Malala Yousafzai
This quote may seem simple and yet it's so profound and true! I entered the world of education nearly ten years ago as an educational assistant with a dream and now I'm a first grade teacher to amazing kids!
I graduated from the University of New Mexico with my masters in Elementary Education in 2006 with an endorsement in TESOL (Teaching English as a Second Language).
Since then, I have intentionally taught at Title I schools because all students deserve a great, hands-on education from a teacher who is welcoming and challenging. This is my 1st year as a first grade teacher and I find myself learning. My math instruction is what I want to improve. I have a curiosity and thirst to know "more" and "why" in the realm of mathematics and how to effectively teach math concepts. I want to fully implement small math groups and math stations in my classroom but first need professional development books addressing "how" for two reasons. First, to meet my students' individualized learning needs. Secondly, so I can learn how to adapt to our current district-adopted curriculum while fostering a learning environment that will give students independence and accountability in mathematics.
My Project
With these teacher use only materials, I can grow further as an educator in math. First, I will use the ink and card stock to create and implement math projects and teacher examples. Next, with the help of Debbie Diller's books Math Stations, along with Making the Most of Small Groups and It Makes Sense! Using Ten-Frames to Build Number Sense, I will learn how to create a math routine but also organize myself as an instructor in small group strategies. All of these books are written and created by teachers who are knowledgeable and experts in their field and I would love to learn from them! My classroom does not have cabinets, so the storage bins and baskets will arrange my teaching materials and learning aids for teacher use only. The binders, binder pockets and file folders will be used to track student assessment, anecdotal notes and other resources from the professional development books.
As a teacher, there is so much for me to study, learn and implement!
I want to make sure my students receive the best and that includes a teacher who uses established methods of teaching and the best learning materials available. These requested materials will allow me to gain valuable information in creating and maintaining a math-enriched classroom that meets my students' needs
