The cost of a 7th and 8th grade set (110) of "The House on Mango Street" and teacher's guide is $1322, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
I am a new teacher at Acme-Delco Middle School. I am teaching English Language Arts to 110 sixth and seventh graders. Actually, I should say that I am trying to teach them to improve their reading, spelling, verbal and writing skills. This is very difficult to do, as there is not one complete set of fiction for my students. My classroom library is pitiful. I am slowly adding to it myself, but paying for these books on my own is becoming quite draining to my bank account.
I requested that my student's families send in five dollars to cover the cost of two books for each child. This request has gone mostly unanswered. Our school is an area where most families struggle to feed and clothe their children; there are no extra resources for books.
Ideally, I am looking to supply three books per student so they have the opportunity to read together and learn together. Right now I need to read any book selections aloud to my classes. This is severely cutting into my instruction time. I am finding it nearly impossible to improve their reading, writing and spelling skills without the support of fiction and reading assignments for my classes.
I am always on the lookout for particular books that would pique my student's interest (as most of them have no interest in reading at all). I have been looking into "Holes", "Surviving the Applewhites", "The House on Mango Street" and other teen fiction.
My goal is for all of my sixth and seventh graders to complete the same books. I can use this fiction to complement vocabulary lessons, writing lessons, instill compassion by appealing to their own experiences and improve my ability to teach effectively.
For this project to be successful I would need 110 copies each of three to four different works of fiction. At this point I would be thrilled to reach this goal one book at a time. This proposal is to purchase a class set of “The House on Mango Street". I desperately want these students to write well and enjoy reading.
Improve literacy without books? Impossible!
