My students need 5 thesauruses and 10 dictionaries to become better readers and writers. The 20 Scholastic News magazine subscriptions will encourage them to become lifelong learners.
I model using a dictionary to find out how to spell words and to define words for my students. I was amazed by how much they love reading the dictionary! It is one of the books they pick up most often during our "Read and Relax" time.
My students attend a Tile I school in rural Georgia.
The majority of the students in my second grade class require Reading and English Language Arts interventions to prepare them for third grade. Using resources and reading material other than textbooks encourages them to read a variety of printed material which enables them to become fluent readers and lifelong learners.
My Project
The students race to get one of the dictionaries I do have in my classroom. They love to be "word detectives" by trying to discover correct spelling, definitions and synonyms for words to make their writing more accurate and creative. I am excited for them because they are learning to be comfortable using resources and growing their vocabulary every day.
We need thesauruses and dictionaries to become better readers and writers. We need a subscription to Scholastic News magazine to encourage them to become life-long learners.
Words are the tools we use to communicate.
As a child's vocabulary grows, so does his or her ability to communicate. Additionally, using these resources will improve a child's reading fluency and accuracy which equips them to become lifelong learners.
