This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"One child, one teacher, one book, can change the world." -Malala Yousafzai.
Many of my students derive from environments where parents lack the ability to provide the reading stamina support required.
The school serves 100% African American students with many of them require special needs support as well. In an effort to support students, I would like to not only use interesting books to read in class, but also develop a book club after school hours.
The uniqueness that each student from this particular background possess is their ability to strive and genuinely want to be successful. They dream big and I want to be the supporter and cheerleader of those big dreams. As students begin to strengthen their reading skills, this will also catapult a higher level of learning in other skills. Thank you for your support.
My Project
The Bluford Series is an astounding series of books that provide stories of predominately African American students who experience similar if the not exact issues I have witnessed with my own students. Each of the stories is told by the narrator or first person. Students are not only faced with obstacles throughout their middle school and high school life, but they are also exposed to several hardships in their personal life. Each book provides a learning lesson on how to cope with difficult challenges. Bluford Series will help students understand how to use contextual clues and provide textual evidence, all the while reading their favorite book.
