This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a high school special education teacher leader in a diverse urban school district. My special education colleagues and I teach in an inclusion setting, meaning all of our students participate in regular education classes, just with more individualized support. Our students range in academic ability and challenges, but they are all resilient and incredible in their own unique ways. There is absolutely nothing I love more about my job than working with these students every day. They are bright, funny, sincere, and determined children who deserve to have an equitable education despite their disabilities or the zip code they grow up in.

My students bring unique experiences and perspectives to the classroom, and they deserve to be met with culturally-responsive and compassionate teaching.

Help us to help these incredible students.

My Project

Our students with disabilities, and all children, deserve to have culturally competent teachers who understand and implement best practices. As educators, we are dedicated to lifelong learners and encourage our students to adopt this mindset as well. We are provided with some professional development opportunities in our school district, but how are we expected to stay current in best practices without access to the latest books and resources?

My goal is to create a growing library of books and resources for the special education department to access.

I ultimately envision creating a space where teachers in my department can rent out books whenever they need access to them and my hope is to create a professional book club amongst my department.

Student outcomes and well-being always drive and justify the need for our professional development. With the knowledge and resources from these books, we can then bring new skills, mindsets, and strategies to our classrooms. Our students are unique and as educators, it is our responsibility to stay current on best practices and research so that we can do our part to provide an equitable, culturally competent, and trauma-informed educational experience.

As you know, teachers are often unfairly expected to pay for much of their own supplies, furniture, and resources for our students. Please help us become better educators so we can help our students without having to empty our pockets!
