Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school, P138M, serves students with disabilities including autism, cerebral palsy and intellectual and emotional disorders, which prevents them from attending a general education school.
We teach our students independence and communication and that although they might have challenges, those challenges do not define who they are.
Our school is located in a very low-income, high-need area in East Harlem. Several of our students are living in foster care or in shelters with their families. Our school serves as a sanctuary for some of these students and our school's mission is to provide a warm, judgment-free environment with access to the best teachers and educational materials to best suit their individual needs.
My Project
For my project, I would like to bring necessary hygiene products and healthy snacks to our school and teach lessons on how to stay clean and healthy. The students at my school range in age from 5 to 11. Some students with autism are such picky eaters, they will only eat Oreos and Doritos all day long. You can see dark circles under their eyes and their lack of energy. I would like to slowly introduce Cliff bars into these students diets and over time, hopefully, change their eating habits. Our students also need to be taught lessons on personal hygiene such as wearing deodorant regularly, washing their hands, applying lotion and using hand sanitizer after they sneeze. I want to also teach them to use disinfectant wipes to clean up after themselves. I have added Post-Its and pens to this project to assist in my lessons.
Because our school is located in a very high-need area, many of my students haven't been exposed to their own personal hygiene products.
I want to teach my students to take ownership of their lives and not rely on others to do things for them. I am hoping this project will empower the students in my school and teach them clean and healthy habits that will last them a lifetime.
