How can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed? Many of the students I work with have various learning difficulties. One of the major learning difficulties my colleagues and I have noticed is with reading on white paper. The words seem to jump around the page for them and they have a difficult time tracking and reading smoothly. We have experimented with colored paper and have found changing the background color works but colored paper is an expense our district just can't deem a reasonable expense.
My Project
The Irlen Overlays I am requesting are for students who have a difficult time reading because the words are not making sense or they are adding in words that don't belong. Some have dyslexia and reading is very difficult for them. Reading in black and white puts a strain on their eyes and tires their brain. Using the color overlays will help the words stay on the page, improve their tracking and not put so much strain on the student's brain or eyes.
We will be able to experiment with the different colors and see which ones work the best with each student.
The students will then be able to carry the overlays with them throughout the day and use them with all their fun and academic reading.
