We are a small school in Montana, and we have a large population of kids who are on free and reduced lunch. Right now our band room is used by students in grades 5-12, and we have 220 students in the band program. The band kids are a fun bunch of extroverts. They provide many services for our community including pep band for sporting events, marching band for the Memorial Day parade, and the jazz band plays gigs for local foundations, businesses, etc. All of that is on top of their concerts and band curriculum. I took over the middle school band program 10 years ago and then was offered the opportunity to do both middle school and high school. It creates a very special environment, which students do not experience in any other subject. I will have them from 5th grade all the way through to their senior year! My students work their tails off to make the program sound excellent and they have a passion for what they do.
My Project
Our saxophone section needs some jazz mouthpieces to give them a better tone, intonation, and help them project their sound. We are ordering one alto sax, one tenor and one baritone mouthpiece to complete a full sax section set up.
The students will notice that they can reach higher and lower notes with ease, as well as sound better with the rest of the band.
These jazz mouthpieces will help the saxophones project through the brass sound and they will improve their intonation. Overall my students will sound more mature with these new mouthpieces.
