This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
1 1/2 years ago our school district was merged with the neighboring bigger school district--also our rivals. It has been a humbling experience for our students.
As we were just getting on our feet, our neighborhood was hit by Hurricane Harvey.
Our high school was not hit directly, but we've had to make space for the middle school. Their school was destroyed.
It is very crowded sharing space. Despite this our students have handled the situation with flexibility and grace.
My Project
Playing chess improves students analytical skills. Students must study each possible move and strategize the best option.
Chess helps students learn to stay ahead of the game which is a very important skill, not only in chess, but also in life.
We play chess before and after school and once a month on a Saturday. But our current boards are from the dollar store and many of the pieces are broken. These new fancy chess boards will encourage students to join the chess club and come to practice in style. The chess club members at school are wonderful, deserving kids!
