As a 5th grade student, I remember sitting on a hard plastic seat at a desk for hours. I was uncomfortable and distracted because I was extremely uncomfortable. I constantly missed important pieces of instruction and was reprimanded for not paying attention. I was unable to move if someone or something was distracting me. As an adult I enjoy the flexibility of being able to choose my seat and my location.
Luckily, today we as educators understand that student choice in seating is beneficial to their engagement and success.
It also empowers students to take charge of their learning, to be responsible, to reach their fullest potential and to attain lifelong decision making skills.
In our school our students are respectful, take ownership, have positive attitudes, are responsible and safe. As educators we strive to build trustworthy relationships with each and every student.
Unfortunately, my students today do not have much choice and are forced to sit on hard plastic chairs at desks due to budget constraints.
My Project
Flexible seating will empower my students by letting them choose a seating arrangement that meets their individual needs. This will increase their focus, attention, and comfort. Helping them to become a more effective student. During Independent Math and Science time students will be able to choose a seating arrangement that will help them to complete work efficiently. They will be able to find a comfortable seat and be able to move if they are distracted. My students will not be stuck at desks or in rows. They will have a say in what works for them.
If you choose to help my project and donate my students will have better focus and will be working on skills they will need as lifelong learners.
