My students are a diverse group of lively 5th graders. The school is a Title I school with predominantly low socioeconomic students; however, our school is full of strong believers that everyone is a leader and we are working hard to develop those skills within the students. One of the ways that our classroom can do that is through opportunity. “Education is the great equalizer.” These kiddos deserve to see that they are loved, and they are worth being given the best!
I teach 5th grade science. Like most schools, there is a limited budget for supplies. Since science is only tested in 5th grade, it tends to fall to the bottom of the list when it comes to budget.
I am requesting a Triple Beam Balance for my classroom to allow the students a chance to examine Mass and Matter of different objects, which is needed to fully master classifying matter (TEKS5.5).
We ran into a challenge this semester by not being able to accurately measure the mass of objects, especially when the mass wasn’t quite at an even gram, as we only had access to scale balances (many of which were missing weights).
