Implementing Technology & Documentation of Student Progress

My students need 2 video-capable digital cameras, with 2 memory cards.

Ms. D. Northwest Middle School
Indianapolis, IN Grades 9-12

Our school is extremely inner-city, the culture being mostly African-American, and Hispanic. We are roughly 10% "other" which includes our Caucasian population. We are a High School, I am the vocal music instructor who teaches also piano and composition, and I need to document their process to aid in compiling their portfolios to get them into college. They are motivated, and understand that the only way out of poverty is an education. This is what we are trying to prove that they have, and the cameras will make that possible.

I know people understand that the fine arts are always last on the list for money. Athletics comes first, and science takes a great deal of the budget, so when they finally get around to the fine arts, even visual art needs are of a greater priority, as their equipment is "consumable." Last year our students wrote a movie script based on a historical event, and then wrote the music to score it, which had to be historically accurate for both the event and the musicology. It was an amazing project, but filming it was a nightmare, since we were begging parents to use their personal cameras and most had none. So then we begged other staff to use theirs, and the students were so careful, and the completed projects were fantastic, however it took about five times longer since we didn't have what we needed.

The students learned last year how to import footage and photos and create a viable film using computers and software I received from a grant, and they were so proud of their work. The cameras we need take excellent photos in a high resolution so that when transferred, the images are crisp and clean, and the video feature works so well. The Canon camera makes everything work so smoothly!!! They are understandable by children who don't usually get to work with that kind of equipment and software. The first week has just ended, and even after the summer, every child who took that class has already come to me and asked to see their movie again, and brought their friends to see their work. I was amazed that this seemed to give to them a boost of self-esteem, that they so desperately need, which was a side-effect I had not expected.

I can't tell you how help like this can change the life of a child. Our students are so unfamiliar with technology, and this gives them a great step into understanding what so many other kids can do in their sleep. You will make it possible for my students to understand that they can do anything, and that college is within reach, because they have proof of an education that so many take for granted. The students will be able to document their progress, and compile a CD to send off with their applications for college, and have the bravery to do so.
