Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is full of energetic, excited students who love hands-on activities and are excited about learning and participating in class activities. They come from mid- to lower-income households. They are hard workers and want to do their best on their classwork.
A handful of my students struggle with learning disabilities which causes issues with being able to focus, which then may at times lead to behavior issues.
My students need to be able to move at random times to help with their focus.
My Project
Keeping a child’s attention on their school work and encouraging them to successfully interact with others students can be difficult for any teacher. Doing so when that child has autism, ADHD or some other learning disability can be even more challenging.
At time it can be difficulty for children to sit any amount of time or be able to write with a regular pen or pencil.
Children with special education needs who use sensory chairs can sit, wiggle, and fidget while intuitively exercising their back muscles and working out their restless energy in comfort and support. A sensory seat is a tool that can help children with autism (and other disorders) stay seated for longer periods of time, particularly during school hours and at home while working on homework. Large whiteboards and markers are easier for children to use who have motor skills issues and when using these tools can participate and be successful just like any other child in a classroom.
