Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I believe that reading and writing needs to be entertaining, challenging, and accessible to all students. These things are very important for me to be a successful 8th grade English Language Arts (ELA) teacher in New York. I teach at an early college model school that helps traditionally underrepresented students make their way to college by offering them college credits for their high school work, affiliated with a local college.
Our school moved to a new building this year and we are currently trying to update and expand our classroom libraries. We do not have access to a building library, so therefore we must supply the students with reading materials in individual classroom libraries. My library is currently out of date, and many books have reached their maximum potential (if you know what I mean). Ultimately, we need classroom sets of books to expand our libraries, and help our students learn through sharing a text, while having the option and freedom to read the book at home.
In addition to our new home, our staff has put lots of time and effort over the past school year to create a cross-curricular learning atmosphere. Since we are an early college school, our students begin their college coursework in 9th grade. This makes our cross-content area teaching and planning much more important, since we have very high expectations and an accelerated program for all our students!
Our next cross-curricular unit is focusing on the immigration boom to the United States after the Civil War. My fellow 8th grade teachers feel we have found the perfect text in The Arrival by Shaun Tan. This is an advanced, wordless graphic novel that will force students to infer and activate prior knowledge. It will also give us abundant writing opportunities. In addition, The Arrival is one of the most entertaining books I have read in a long time. I cannot wait to give my 8th graders an opportunity to get their hands on it.
I hope that with help from DonorsChoose, my students will have the opportunity to grow as readers, writers, and learners in both ELA and Social Studies due to the concurrent teaching of immigration in both classes.
Your help in this effort will bring another level of understanding to my students.
With 60 books of The Arrival by Shaun Tan, I know my students will enrich their education in both classes, enhance their understanding of immigration, and will help them connect with what they are learning. These skills will help them transition to college students next year, setting them up for success for the next four years and beyond! Hopefully you can be the one to put the book in their hands.
