My Students

I teach at a Title I junior high school, and the student demographics consist of many low income students. Many of our student have low technology skills and have limited access to technology.

In my 7th and 8th grade classes I introduce STEAM art projects which creates lots of excitement due to the student's limited access to technology.

These include small electronic art projects, various digital arts, 2D games that they hand code, along with traditional art. The students love the tech inspired artwork and are always begging for more opportunities to create with technology as a medium.

My Project

Art has been evolving over the years from the traditional mediums to digital art. As newer technology comes to light the further, the cost becomes an obstacle. When I showed a video of the Oculus Rift and the Google Tilt Brush in action, creating 3D virtual art, the students went wild with excitement.

I chose the Oculus Rift because when it is coupled with the Google Tilt Brush, it creates an immersive and awe inspiring way for students to create visual art.

Throughout the school year, roughly 425 7th and 8th grade regular and special needs students pass through my classroom. The Oculus Rift and the Tilt Brush would allow each student to experience 21st century art making. It would also expose them to new technology, while reinforcing traditional art and design concepts.

Many of my students come from challenging situations and access to technology is often hindered by financial barriers. By having this technology in the classroom, it will allow my students to be exposed to new creative experiences and broaden their future career aspirations.
