My students come from a highly diverse background within our urban school district. My students have the unique opportunity in being fully immersed in the German language since beginning school in kindergarten. In becoming multilingual, students' brains become quicker in thinking skills. These skills allow them to excel academically, as well as strengthening their logic skills.
I want to build a classroom community that is safe, respectful, fosters creativity and is culturally responsive to the needs of the students.
We do this by sharing our experiences and backgrounds. We create a community of respect with team building activities and establishing classroom expectations as a group.
My Project
Incorporating STEM into classroom instruction is a great way to increase rigor, engage students, increase student discourse and foster cooperative problem solving skills. In this DonorsChoose.org grant, I am requesting supplies needed for STEM projects and activities to be used through the school year. STEM is a great fit with Immersion education because student discourse in the language will increase. Student vocabulary will also be pushed to a higher academic level with STEM.
Students will have the opportunity to problem solve, evaluate their solutions and then improve those solutions.
Students will work in cooperative groups using the materials provided by this DonorsChoose.org project for STEM challenges.
Our request includes staple supplies for any STEM task, such as toothpicks, rubber bands, and craft sticks. The containers will keep the materials organized within the classroom. Students will create a puff mobile, build bridges to support weight, as well as see who can build the tallest towers.
