Do you read online and fact check as you go, or find out more information about what interests you? Most of my students don't know how to do the lateral research necessary for the 21st century, nor do they have access to the technology needed to do it.
The urban high school in the Bay Area that I teach at is designated as high poverty because of the large number of students who struggle to eat outside of school, and live in small rooms with many family members.
While some students have their own rooms and their own computers, the group of long-term English Learners I support are not so privileged. In California only 56% of English Learners graduate from high school. My students are natural leaders but they need resources and opportunities to be able to gain the skills they will need to get to and succeed in college.
My Project
Having tablets for my students will allow them to learn and practice the types of constant research skills that are used in the 21st century. If they are learning about a topic through a lecture, documentary, or reading, they need the instinct and ability to look up everything that will extend their learning. After they have done their research and written their papers and created their PowerPoints, they need ways to save their documents. Flash drives give them that opportunity, and getting them helps students realize how much they deserve.
Your support of my students will enable them to go farther than most students of their backgrounds.
They will then be able to help hundreds and thousands of more students like them. The ripple effect of your donation will last forever.
