I work in a low-income area in Kansas City. My students are ethnically diverse. About 40% of my students do not come from English speaking homes. Many of my students come to school without basic school supplies.
My students are bright and inquisitive.
My students need to grow their imaginations. They love to question the world and ask questions of it. Most of my students read below grade level. They need to be able to open their eyes and their minds to the beauty of books.
Some of my kids are true survivors. I want to use this book to broaden their minds, to improve their literacy skills, and to let them imagine. I am asking for a classroom set of the book Hatchet.
Students will read, discuss, and imagine as they join Brian in the wilderness.
I will make several weeks an in-depth reading and project based learning which immerse them in the story. I want them to imagine themselves surviving the plane crash. I want them to feel the emotion of the story. They can do all of this while diving into the text and reading for ultimate understanding. This will lead us to the end of the year and prepare them for 8th grade.
