My students are English language learners. While many of them were born in the United States, some have recently moved here from impoverished and war-torn countries to obtain a rich educational experience and better standard of living. Seeking out resources like Donorschoose is one more way for me to give my students opportunities they have never had before.
My students depend on different approaches to develop their English skills.
The internet is endless and one of the best resources for them to do this. They rely on iPads and computers to use language and literacy programs, look up and translate words, and even Google images to make visual connections to unfamiliar words. However, because of their socioeconomic status, the majority of them do not have access to these resources at home. School and my classroom is one of the only places where they know they will be exposed to the technology and digital education.
My Project
At PSIS 268Q, our English language learners have access to Imagine Learning, a language and literacy program that supports their English language development. We have a population of 124 ELLs. But, we have just 17 computers. That is 124 students competing to use 17 computers.
One iPad will not be enough, but it will make a great difference.
In one day, anywhere from 8 to 16 students will be able to use this iPad. One iPad will allow each of these students to engage with Imagine Learning and meet their 20 minutes target for the day. It may be the only time, in one week, that they will use the program.
Thank you in advance for your contribution towards our Imagine Learners.
