Imagine Knit

The cost of 44 knitting needles and 50 pounds of assorted yarns for this proposal is $615, including shipping and <a target="new" href="" onclick="g_openWindow('', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.

The students in my third grade public San Francisco classroom come from all over the world. We speak many different languages, from Mongolian to Urdu!! One way we cross borders is through art. For the past two years I have taught my 20 students how to knit. This year I was lucky enough to have an expert "elder" knitter help us. The class went nuts!! We now have a group of 8-9 year old boys and girls who can cast on, decrease, increase, bind off, knit and purl! We have made purses, hats, scarves, and even crocheted shoelaces (an original idea from a male student)! As we listen to books on tape (Crispin, Sounder, Treasure Island) these artists knit away. It is a beautiful sight to see. Our boys and girls are from low-income families. They live in a rough neighborhood where they see homeless people, street walkers and drug dealers. I like to think of our school as a diamond in the rough. At Redding School, they learn, they are safe, they build confidence and esteem. I would like to provide each of my students with their own set of bamboo needles and give them an opportunity to use beautiful yarn. I would need 20 sets of knitting needles of various sizes and enough yarn to make a few projects each. I would like them to keep their needles, so they can continue knitting. My former students still visit and thank me for teaching them this craft. They often go on to design their own knitting projects!! We are building self-reliant, creative children. Knitting allows them to stop, relax and think while creating something that will endure. Sometimes it's the only quiet time they have. Thank you for your consideration.
