Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from high poverty, low socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of them live in low income apartments. One hundred percent of them qualify for government assistance and the federal free lunch program. Many of them are ELL learners and speak English as a second language. However, these barriers do not discourage their love for learning!
These students come to school every day excited and ready to improve their reading and writing.
Their parents are very concerned about their children's education to provide them a better life. Although they are disadvantaged in so many ways, you would never know it by their positive attitudes and eagerness to learn.
My Project
This year our school is conforming to twenty-first century teaching and learning styles. No longer are the days of textbooks, worksheets, and paper pencil activities. We are trying to incorporate team building, critical thinking activities, where students are discussing and explaining their reasoning and thinking.
We don't live in a factory based learning environment anymore!
Students must be challenged to enter the new economy workforce.
These STEM activities will encourage critical thinking skills, as well as promote student engagement as students work through building activities and problem-solving events. The Fairy Tales Problem Solving and Real-World STEM Challenges Small-Group kits will be utilized during reading time for whole language that also uses science skills. The Bridge Building Engineering Center and Young Architects Design Blocks will be used during science class to promote fun, challenging, and engaging lessons that also promote teamwork.
