My Students

I am so excited about the progress our science department has made by engaging a variety of students to take more science classes. So many of our refugee and immigrant populations are engaged in science because they are doing science, rather than talking about science. When challenged with an engineering lab, they solve the problem, then learn the language to present their findings. This approach has made many of our high poverty and extremely diverse population sign up for more science while becoming more fluent! Because of this, I will be teaching two sections of chemistry this year to meet our growing demand of juniors and seniors who want to take four years of science instead of the required three.

My Project

With our added sections of chemistry at our school we simply need more supplies. If I don't have my own bunsen burners I would have to plan around other chemistry teachers schedules to borrow supplies, and since bunsen burners are used in almost every lab. We are the largest high school in Oregon, this would be a nuisance.

Bunsen burners will be used for candy engineering, hot/cold pack engineering, reactions, can crushing, flame tests of metal chlorides, and plenty of demos to teach chemistry concepts.

Bunsen burners are the most essential component in chemistry, creating the activation energy of many reactions. Since I'm teaching curriculum to juniors and seniors that are college bound they deserve an engaging science education, with real-world labs, and quality supplies.
