Our students are incredibly creative and innovative. They continually raise the bar with their ownership of learning and bravery to try new things. Our elementary school is a special place; as the only district in the state without a racial majority, we celebrate the diversity of our classrooms by affirming our variety of cultures, languages, and learning styles. Though many of our students live in poverty, their resiliency speaks volumes about their capability and agency to change their community!
My students deserve to experience all the world has to offer; they deserve to be heard.
They benefit from being able to create, explore, and collaborate with others. We build community and character through rich experiences and support all learners, even when faced with low funding.
My Project
Our school puts on the most fabulous Black History Program. Our kids and staff work so hard to celebrate Black history and take great pride in this event. We have officially grown out of our elementary school gym and will be moving to a bigger venue this year. With great success comes more responsibility. Each year we have dinner before the program, but many of our families cannot afford the cost of paying for their entire family to eat at the event.
The goal of this project is to lower costs and ensure that all families and students can afford this celebratory meal.
This event has become a staple in our community. It brings in an audience of community members who do not even attend school in the district! This year our theme is, "Imagine a World Without..." We are challenging our audience to imagine a world without certain influences from the black community. Your donation will help this event become even more successful and ensure that all families and students don't have to imagine a world without BBQ, at least for one night!
