This is the first year in a very long time that I have a group of students who enjoy the dramatic play center. Unfortunately, the dramatic play center in my classroom is lacking in many items which help the children learn how to be imaginative and play with each other.
My school is located in a suburb of Atlanta, GA.
We are a Title 1 school with 81% of our population on free and reduced price lunch. I teach special needs preschool students. I teach them from the day they turn three years old, if they qualify for services, and they leave me when they enter Kindergarten. My particular classroom contains mainly students with Autism or students who thrive in a more visual, structured classroom. Each and every student has something to teach me. I only hope that I can teach them something during the short time they are with me.
My Project
Children learn best through play. Children want to play with toys that excite them, have bright colors and make noises. Special Needs children need more instruction in how to play with one another and how to play 'make believe'. This type of play typically does not come naturally to them. My housekeeping center is lacking in many items needed to engage in imaginary play. For instance, all of our baby dolls do not have clothing and I have requested some in which to dress them as well as 'magic' bottles so the children can 'feed' the babies. I have requested a 'Dress Up Carousel' so that the children have a place to put things such as dress up clothes and baby doll clothes. This 'Dress Up Carousel' includes a mirror so that the children can see what they look like when they are in dress up clothing. I have also asked for some typical things that you may see in any kitchen, such as a play microwave and play tea pot.
These small additions to my classroom will help my students develop appropriate play skills so that they can go to birthday parties, go on play dates, or go to the park and be able to play appropriately with other children their age.
