Remember as a child, that feeling of awe when YOU accomplished something in a way that YOU wanted to? Maybe something you felt would be impossible? In a school community where 84% of students are from low income families and 36% have limited English Language proficiency, my students are faced with many challenges and obstacles both in and out of the classroom.
As a teacher my role is to be a facilitator to my students driving them to take ownership of their education by making challenging and responsible choices while learning the curriculum and standards that are required, so instructional goals are met.
My students are creative and eager to learning while using their artistic talents. My class this year is a group of inquisitive learners who ask to individualize assignments and want to take risks while completing projects that are aligned to the standards. I strive to provide a welcoming environment for my students with the tools to foster their learning styles and succeed in the ever changing world. My classroom is student-centered allowing their interests and learning styles to guiding them through inquiry based activities.
Bringing the Cricut Maker into my classroom will allow my students to create projects using recycled materials. My students are imaginative and very creative. Using the Cricut Maker students will be able to design projects on-line, send them to the Maker to be cut, and finally assemble them to turn their imagined designs into real creations to be proud of.
This is a great opportunity for students in a low-income area to benefit from various donated materials, including fabric and cardboard, for creative projects that otherwise might not happen.
Students will learn the art of up-cycling materials that would likely end up in a landfill. The possibilities are endless and only limited by the students' imaginations!
