Our students come from a high poverty/low income school with the majority of my students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. We also have a diverse population of students, many with English as a Second Language. Some of these students know little to no English. My students face many challenges at home and at school. I can't control what happens at home; however, I can try to provide learning enrichment experiences in my classroom.
School is a place where they can come to learn, be respected, appreciated, and loved in a safe environment.
I want to instill a love of learning, a sense of pride in their accomplishments, and for them to know that they can succeed at whatever they choose to accomplish.
My Project
Students need a way to research and produce their writing in the classroom. They love engaging activities that require research and imagination. In this day and age of technology, iPads help meet those needs of students who struggle with books and pencils. In addition to the literacy side of education, STEM is becoming the area where they need students and interest in elementary school just makes sense.
I loved watching my students create movies last year with iPads, but the groups were so large that it was a struggle.
This project will allow students to work in smaller groups on iPads, increasing engagement. My district has an online learning platform that students will be able to access through the iPads, as well. I have also included a wobble chair to help with focus and engagement for those students who enjoy movement and find technology less engaging with the limited movement it often allows.
