My students need items like doll furniture and bottles to help them engage in the activities they see in the world around them, as well as practice their social skills.
My class is part of our integrated pre-school program. They are one of the classes of 4 years olds getting ready for kindergarten, but preferred to be called the AM Penguins or PM Penguins based on our mascot Sir Nils (the penguin).
Learning all about life is a big part of what we do everyday.
We have a dramatic play center that gives children opportunities to try out and explore various roles that they could encounter as they grow up. Our center starts out as a housekeeping corner, but changes frequently. It becomes an apple orchard, a pizza restaurant, a bakery, a grocery store, an animal hospital and even a space station. I am looking at specifically improving the center where they care for babies. This allows them to work on how to care for others, work together as well as how to keep the area organized.
My Project
In our classroom we use our imaginations and creativity - ALOT! I am going to use this baby center with doll furniture, bottles and kitchen set to create opportunities that allow the children to practice their self-care skills as well as how to care for someone else. For my students with special needs, having items that they can easily handle and I can use to facilitate the development of their skills is very important.
Dramatic play gives children a chance to work on self-regulation and conflict resolution, as well as, opportunities to develop their literacy and numeracy skills.
Adding in items that they see people use in their everyday life allows for that creativity and imagination to come alive! Having this baby doll furniture and accessories gives the children the chance to practice skills like how to care for others and working together while developing their organizational and social skills.
