"All grown-ups were once children but only few of them remember it." - Antoine De Saint-Exupery. I want my students to imagine something different, something better, and something more interesting. This journal will do just that!
My students are identified gifted students in grades 1-8 that attend school in a rural school district in Louisiana.
They come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds, schools, and ethnicities.
They are enthusiastic about learning topics above and beyond the regular curriculum and are especially eager to learn new things. They come to my gifted education classroom one day a week to challenge themselves. They work hard to pursue interests, engage their curiosity, and explore higher level topics. They collaborate, use technology, and create amazing products that show their higher level critical and creative thinking skills. I feel so blessed to be able to teach them each and every week.
My Project
I've read that some of the greatest revolutionary acts of our time came to be because someone had the courage to imagine something new. I believe my students have immense powers and can use the magical energy that comes from their imaginations to do just that! Keri Smith has done a wonderful job creating journals for writers of all ages. Her journals help writers think outside of the box and explore the world around them. Each day next school year I would like for my students to use these as our "textbook for creativity". I want each one of my students to have a personal copy of Keri Smith’s "The Imaginary World of…" creative writing journal. This is something they will use, write in, explore, and share everyday during next school year. They will explore and imagine topics such as building a museum, creating historical artifacts, creating a time capsule, describing an imaginary adventure, planning a parade, writing a traveler’s guide, creating a soundtrack, and so much more!!
We do not have textbooks in the gifted classroom.
This project will help ensure that each student in my class has a personal copy of this amazing journal. All resources are teacher-created or student-supplied. It really takes the simplest things to make the biggest changes. I truly believe that my students will be the change in the world. I intend to use the time I have with them to inspire that. "One child, one teacher, one book, and one pen can change the world." - Malala Yousafza
