Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are preschool age children with a wide range of special and unique needs that range from severe to mild autism spectrum disorders, hearing loss, apraxia, down syndrome, intellectual impairments, rare genetic abnormalities, voice disorders, stuttering, cerebral palsy, general language delays, and children that are non-verbal. Although not all of my students are mainstreamed into the general education environment after preschool due to their specific needs, we do prepare all of our students for the high demands of the educational setting. Thank you for your interest and support.
My Project
Laminating sheets and velcro are essential supplies for making custom made materials for students with special or unique needs. However, preschool kids are often rough and -unintentionally- tend to damage the very materials we use to teach them new concepts. So I am frequently making new things to replace damaged materials.
The previously mentioned supplies will allow me to replace and make my students' personalized materials such as fun interactive books, games, and visual aids.
For example, interactive books give me additional opportunities to teach themes and generalize basic concepts. Kids do learn by repetition, which is one of the reasons they never seem to get tired of reading the same book. However, if you are exposing students to different books/materials every so often, but they share a common theme, then a teacher or therapist can tell whether a child has mastered a specific skill or still needs help. Plus my students are more engaged in the book if they have a role to play, such as matching a picture or lifting a flap to discover what is underneath.
I also frequently make either barrier games or cut-outs of feeding an animal or silly creature attached to a box, and the kids think this is hilarious. Especially after we make loud, munching sounds. The more fun a child has learning, the more likely the child will retain the lesson. There is so much scientific research that supports play-based activities. So please help me make fun engaging materials for my students to help them learn quicker.
Thank you for taking the time to read this grant, and I appreciate any donation given.
