My students are mostly from low-income families that live in a gang-infested, poverty-stricken environment. They face many challenges on a daily basis. My students struggle with feeling safe, whether they are sitting on the front porch or walking to school.
My job is to make them feel safe at school as well as to give them hope that they can overcome any situation.
Every day I encourage my students to be a catalyst for change in their school, home, and their environment. My students know that they can overcome anything if they try.
My project is so basic that I hesitated quite a few times before I created it. I hesitated because these materials are a basic necessity that all students should have for their education and many of my students are not ready to learn because they are missing basic school supplies.
When students have basic supplies like pens, pencils, paper, folders, markers, and composition books on the first day, the students feel ready to learn and it allows students the opportunity to get organized and to focus on a new start.
When all students have the proper materials the whole class wins because we are all ready and prepared to learn.
