My students need authentic writing experiences. Making books using the various book covers and our Cover One machine will allow them to experience their own work published in a book.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend a neighborhood school in an urban, inner city area. Our school is primarily African-American, with 100% of our students receiving free lunch. Our students are performing below grade level on reading and writing standardized tests.
Closing the achievement gap in literacy is an urgent concern.
Finding ways to foster a love of reading and writing is essential to closing this wide gap. Creating an authentic audience by publishing their writing will motivate my students to write creatively.
My Project
Students are writing every day, but rarely do they experience the real world feeling of having their work published. Using our existing Cover One machine and the book covers provided from this project, we will be able to create books that our students can be proud of.
Imagine their faces when they present their families with a book that they wrote and illustrated themselves.
The joy of sharing their work in such a tangible way will motivate my students to write something that others will enjoy reading. The pride of authoring a real book will help my students work harder to make their work wonderful.
