How does a teacher compete with video games and TV these days? With the hottest new series books! If you want to see books flying off the shelves, come visit our classroom. Our books are displayed, organized, well cared for and well-read. And we aim to provide the latest high-interest books!
My students are 2nd and 3rd graders who attend an international school in Washington state.
Over 80% of my students receive free and reduced rate lunch. Over 50% come from homes where only Spanish is spoken. However, the families are determined to help their children succeed, and this is reflected in the students' determination throughout the day. These bright and curious children want to work every moment to learn new words, figurative language and understand how English works. They read like crazy every day, and cherish new books.
My Project
In Autumn, I teach my students about fiction. We learn how characters face challenges and how they are just like us in many ways. Once students master "watching" a character, the fun begins. I introduce them to "Series Reading", where they can follow a character through many books. My students linger by the series books with a partner, choosing just the right book. They read it together, asking questions and writing up their thinking to share with me. With the enthusiasm they have for series, I can teach anything about fiction, and they love it. Best of all, they remember it, because they want to read. My students need books at their own reading level, such as Marvin Redpost, Katie Woo, and Ricky Ricotta and His Mighty Robot series books where they can learn to see how a character grows and changes in a variety of situations.
After studying fiction last year, my students graduated into higher level series books, and fell in love with characters like "Benny" from Boxcar Children and "Julie" from Secrets of Droon.
Yet some of our series have gaps- it can be hard to find the next book you're craving to read. Keep us reading!
With our new books, imagine the classroom: pairs of students in every corner, reading intently, comprehending, laughing, gripping pages with suspense… on the way to college.
