Help me give my students materials to improve fine motor skills, sensory deficits, self-regulation and upper body strength to function appropriately in their learning environment.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I work with students with special needs ranging in age of 5-21 years old within all grade levels between Kindergarten to 12th Grade. Most of the students I work with are in the elementary level. Each of my students are unique in their own way, but most of my students require sensory needs and tools to strengthen their fine motor skills in order to function within their learning. I see most of my students in a one-to-one session where I work with them on strengthening of fine motor skills, sensory processing, and self-regulation.
Fine motor skills, sensory processing, and self-regulation tools are imperative for my students to learn, participate, cooperate, and maintain their attention to function appropriately in the classroom.
My students strive to incooperate the strategies that I give with assistance in order to make their day easier as they matriculate through the school day. I also give strategies in order to improve daily living skills within the school setting such as eating, fastners with clothing, and opening of various containers which also requires hand strength. My students would benefit from various tools to improve their function within the learning environment in order to be as independent as possible.
With this project, my kids will learn the fundamentals of yoga and will utilize the strategies in order to help with self-regulation, behaviors, mindfulness, and core/upper body strength. With these strategies, my students will be able to improve their functioning in the learning environment to help them become as independent as possible.
Yoga is helpful with improving children who have deficits to improve strength, regulation, and behaviors.
These students will be given techniques to even help them with anxiety and stress within the learning environment. Yoga has many evidence-based research with yoga and kids. This is a great way to benefit and improve the child and their needs.
Yoga benefits are very therapeutic and will start off each session as the foundation. After engaging in yoga, We will conduct various activities that focuses on strengthening of upper body strength and improving fine motor skills according to each student's needs. Strengthening upper body strength and improving fine motor skills will help my students with special needs to improve their functioning within the classroom and within the learning environment.
Some activities that will be incorporated for upper body strengthening and fine motor activities will be writing, coloring, glueing and cutting appropriately. Also strengthening with therabands help with posture and maintaining participation to task longer. These are some of the examples of activities to help with my student's needs. Sensory activities also improve with my student's participation in class and maintaining self-regulation to reduce behaviors related to the student's unique sensory deficits.
