Many of my students have discovered the mystery and adventure of reading. Some are wandering and have not found the way. I want to bring them all together and introduce them to more genres, authors and collections. My hope is to foster the love of reading, a feeling that I desire for all students.
I am the librarian for a suburban Title I elementary school with 100% of the school receiving free or reduced price lunch.
My students speak 16 different languages resulting in a high number of students who are English Language Learners (ELL). At home the family either speaks very little or no English. Many of the students do not have access to books at home, and this is their avenue to experience the world of books. I want to provide a meaningful, fun and comfortable atmosphere for this experience.
My students need a place to gather and lose themselves in my stories. A colorful and welcoming carpet will bring us together for these moments, make lasting good memories, and teach them that school is a safe and positive place to be. It will also help them to focus, feel included, and build a stronger classroom community.
My Project
My students' time in the library is very brief, a short 25 minutes each week; therefore I want to make the best use of that time. I allow them about 10 minutes of checkout time, and then we move to the carpet for story time. The transition needs to be quick and smooth. A carpet with individual color blocks will help students find a spot and settle in, making the best use of time. Many students struggle with behavior and need defined boundaries and consistency that a color block carpet will also provide for us.
Donations to my project will create a fun gathering place where students can feel comfortable and safe in their own space.
They can sit back and lose themselves in story land. Reading is the steppingstone of life itself and the very most important part of learning. What better way to help a child than to make them feel safe and "At Home."
