Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher new to ETK (Extended Transitional Kindergarten). It is a newer program that introduces preschool age students (ages 4-5) to a public school setting. I teach at a Title I school in a small suburb outside of a major city. The majority of my students are Hispanic, and many come from low income families.
Most of my students either have not attended any preschool program or only attended a 2-3 hour a day program.
The ETK program allows parents who work to have a quality preschool program for six hours each day with a credentialed teacher. We offer free breakfast to all students and have free and reduced lunch. Many students have siblings at our school so it makes it easy for parents to drop off and pick up children. The preschoolers love to see their big brother or sister at school and some siblings even volunteer in the class on their recess or lunch breaks.
My Project
My students are beginning their formal school careers and for many it's the first time they have had to interact and learn to get along with children who are different than themselves.
Social-emotional development for young children is a crucial measure of future success in school and life.
With books and posters about moods and emotions, my students can take the first step in understanding their emotions and feelings. The next step is to celebrate themselves and create paper people using supplies like buttons, jewels, foam shapes and wiggly eyes to represent them. By sharing books about accepting others and character, as well as offering them games about making good choices and play food from various cultures, I am encouraging them to recognize the great variety of people we have in the world and how they can work together to play and learn.
