I'm Game...Games in the English Classroom for Fun (and Learning!)
My students need fun games such as Wordical, Scrabble, and Apples to Apples, to provide face time to help them socially and academically. Games are a great way to learn soft skills necessary in today's world.
My high schoolers all live in rural South Georgia. Many students have never been more than one or two counties over. They've never traveled beyond a 100 mile radius of a our small four stop light town.
All of the students in our school receive free breakfast and lunch; not because their parents don't work hard, but because jobs are scarce in our community.
Many of our parents are involved and encouraging. We all want what is best for our students.
My students work hard in the classroom. They embrace each day with enthusiasm.
My Project
Face time...no, not the app, but the real face to face time that students need with each other to build rapport and trust is lacking in our current iPhone and ChromeBook culture. While it is necessary for students to be good with technology, sometimes it is just as important to break out games and let high school students be high school students.
Games in the classroom for fun and learning will give my students a chance to play word games and thinking games that give them literary skills (allusions anyone?) and give them vocabulary skills.
Test days after the tests are done or days when a majority of the students are missing will no longer be a wasted day. Games such as Wordical, Scrabble, and Apples to Apples are highly engaging and support the standards I'm assessing in my classroom.
