The over 450 students at our school are vibrant, inquisitive learners that are willing to take risks and problem-solve independently. On March 13th their school closed due to COVID19. Our demographics left many of our students scrambling for the technology they need to learn outside of the walls of our school. The district was able to disseminate many needed technology resources and now these students deserve high-quality instruction.
Our school is a Title I funded school which translates to a concentration of students struggling with everything that poverty brings into their lives and into their education.
Remote learning is simply one more hurdle we as a learning community will overcome.
Despite these challenges, they have a love of learning that is fostered by the innovative and cross-curricular projects I create for the library program. They take risks and tackle learning with an open mind and inquisitiveness.
My Project
Our students were privileged to have a visiting author and illustrator right before COVID 19 forced our closure. They were presented with an assembly where the illustrator demonstrated the craft of digital drawing. They were enthralled and eager to engage in it themselves.
A Surface Pro and a digital stylus coupled with Microsoft Bamboo Paper will be a multifaceted device to allow this exploration of digital design.
The device will not only allow the drawing feature but as it is a tablet device, photo editing software can be installed to create a finished product. We are currently illustrating the setting in some of the stories that we are reading. Using this tool, I can share my screen remotely, project their design and they can offer suggestions to each other on how to make improvements. The changes can be automatic with a click of the stylus. The drawings can then go back into the students' hands and further manipulation can happen.
Once school resumes in the building, this device will be a hands-on tool that students can use to create digital designs from inception to final design.
