Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are curious learners, always asking questions and wanting to know more about the world around them. They are especially excited by nature, animals, the environment and space. They are willing to put in the work to understand the world around them.
My students are collaborative learners.
They help each other because they know that many minds are greater than one. We are a supportive community where everyone is a teacher and a learner.
My students are 21st-century learners. They are growing up in a digital world, and using technology regularly to solve problems and complete tasks. Their world is fast-paced, colorful, and ever-engaging.
My Project
As a reward to my students for working hard all week, I want to offer them a relaxing afternoon of kicking back with a good book. Every Friday during silent reading time, I'll turn out the lights and students will grab their books and turn on their flashlights!
The novelty of reading in the dark will create a new interest in reading that students have never experienced at school.
"Flashlight Fridays" will bring fun and comfort to the classroom, encouraging students feel more relaxed and engaged in their books. Getting lost in the story is what makes reading fun, and I'm always looking for new ways for students to feel that special connection to their books. Comfy seating helps too! In addition to flashlights and batteries, I am requesting five plush floor cushions, so students can stretch out on the floor while they read.
Not only will these materials foster a more exciting reading environment, they will increase the overall focus in the classroom. Offering an incentive like Flashlight Fridays will encourage my students to give their best effort in all areas for the whole week so they can earn that reward.
