My students need a world globe that will illuminate. This will help make different parts of the world become real and give the students a better understanding of where the countries are located in relationship to Arkansas.
I am the high school media specialist for grades 7-12 in a small rural school in Arkansas. Our student population consists of over 55 % of students qualifying for free and reduced lunches. I am also a classroom teacher for 7th grade students. One unit I teach is the study of countries throughout our world.
Many of our students have close relatives that have served or are currently serving in a branch of the armed forces. Students are encouraged to choose a country where someone they know is currently visiting or serving in the military. Students learn map skills, globe details, and various reference materials are covered in this unit. Students get the opportunity to search the web for plane tickets, cost, and travel information for these countries.
To complete this project, I would like a stand alone globe with a light. The globe I currently use is very old and visually unappealing. Students gather round in a circle and share with one another about the rare and unusual customs, events and other information that they learned about their country. I can picture an illuminated globe, in a classroom with the lights dimmed, with students capturing the attention of one another while they share interesting stories with one another.
By being able to purchase a globe, students would have the means to visually express the distance from Arkansas to their country of choice and be better equipped to put in perspective the world surrounding them. Many of our students have never been out of the state of Arkansas, and I feel this would help stimulate their interest and desire to see the world and recognize how different the world around us really is. I truly believe that it is the small things in life that make the big difference. Together we can help make that difference in many students by lighting up a small portion of their life.
