Illuminate Japanese American History With a Graphic Novel

Help me give my students copies of an illuminating graphic novel that encourages a love of books, and teaches an important part of our history.

My Project

Many of my eighth grade Language Arts students are currently reading at lower grade levels. I am excited to introduce this riveting graphic novel, They Called Us Enemy, by George Takei, to increase their reading practice and encourage a love of books!

These books will allow reluctant readers to experience reading as a fun, enlightening activity.

This graphic novel will be one of two books read by our class about Japanese imprisonment in the U.S. during World War II, and They Called Us Enemy will offer a helpful visual complement to the story for students who struggle to engage with longer texts. Many students are likely unfamiliar with the history of Japanese internment, and so this unit offers not only literacy experience, but an important history lesson as well. I will supplement the literature with informational texts about World War II and our country's response to Japanese citizens here.
