My students need a new and innovative, fast paced method for learning and retaining new material. Classroom Jeopardy is the answer. It is interactive and very engaging.
My fifth graders are from economically disadvantaged homes. They are hard workers and have big hopes and dreams like being doctors, fashion designers, and movie directors. They love math, reading, and writing. They love learning. This is evident by the smiles after learning new skills.
Our school is located in an urban city and is comprised of 95% students who qualify for free and reduced lunch.
There is a large Hispanic population. Many of my students are typical fifth graders. They are looking forward to Middle School, getting jobs, and of course, driving! At the beginning of the school year they wrote personal narratives. It was heartbreaking to read about how they have been bullied, have no father in the home, or can afford very little. We have a Family Support worker that has grants for providing students clothing and we have a program called Food Lifeline that provides fresh fruits and vegetables and well as non-perishable food once a month. Many of our families participate in this program. Our PTA has little to no funds to support classroom projects. They barely have enough to assist with the basics. My students are truly appreciative for the things I get for them out of my personal funds. The Classroom Jeopardy game would be a great enhancement.
My Project
Since the adoption of the Common Core Standards the rigor for teaching and learning has increased tremendously. From the time the bell rings we are going non-stop with math, science or social studies, and reading and writing. They go to Music or PE every other day. There is little time in the schedule for fun. So, I thought by having Classroom Jeopardy, I could combine learning and fun - which go hand in hand. Student engagement in increase several times over when students are engaged. Our students today need more interactive methods to learn and retain material. Classroom Jeopardy is excellent for promoting learning and retention, team work, and good sportsmanship. Because there are customizable programs, I will be able to set the questions for our current units of study. The published curriculum's do not always meet the needs of my students. This program can be tailor made for specific areas of focus. What a great way to administer an assessment!
My project will make a difference because it will meet the learning styles of my students.
They need rigor, fast paced instruction, and they need to learn how to collaborate with one another. Using this program will send the message that learning is necessary but also can be fun. There are plenty opportunities for students to "sit and get." They are over tested and don't have enough time to play. This game is the key to getting students up and moving while teaching them at the same time.
