Each and every day I encourage my students to do their personal best. Our classroom motto is, "It's okay not to know, but it's not okay not to try." They are each strong and independent learners, as a teacher it is my job to provide them with educational opportunities that allow them to thrive.
My students are vibrant and brilliant young learners.
Despite the fact that many of them are five, turning six they are always ready to learn and they themselves, have a lot of great ideas. I teach at a small rural school within a very close knit community. Many of my students knew each other prior to entering kindergarten and are very positive and uplifting towards one another, always wanting what is best for their peers.
My Project
As an educator I always strive to integrate literacy into other content areas such as math, science, and social studies. Reading unlocks many doors and for my students who are just learning to read in kindergarten, and entire world is theirs when they are able to sound out letters to form words and then build sentences with those words. One of the five components to our literacy time is Listening to Reading. At this station students listen to books, typically on cassette or CD, and then either respond to questions following the text or complete an activity associated with the story they just heard. Having i-Pod shuffles in my classroom would allow me to pick books from my own classroom library, record myself reading them, and then transfer that audio file onto the i-Pod for the student to listen to without having to purchase each on CD or cassette individually, incurring a lot of additional expense.
With donations to this project my students will have the ability to listen to a much larger collection of books rather than the small number I currently own either on cassette or CD.
Each of the six i-Pods will contain a different story that each student will listen to throughout the course of the week. This will expose students to an incredible amount of literature that will sharpen their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and fluency which can then be transferred to other content areas.
