My students need iPads to assist them in building 21st Century skills in the areas of technology (coding iPad apps for their robotics -Lego Mindstorms Ev3 Robot kits and Sphero Educational Kit).
My students are bright, motivated and intelligent scientists, mathematicians, explorers, writers, artists and more. They are growing up in an era where 21st Century skills are necessary for our students to be able to successfully participate in the global economy. Without these skills they won’t be adequately prepared for college and work. Their desire to use all forms of technology to acquire and learn information in school is contagious and very exciting as a teacher.
Students around the world are using iPads to build dynamic learning experiences.
My 4th grade students range from gifted learners to learners with disabilities. Their enthusiasm for learning is seen daily and iPads will only enhance their continued curiosity in learning any and all things. I live and teach by the quote “Curiosity is the compass that leads us to our passions. Follow it and you won’t be disappointed. The future belongs to the curious.”
My Project
This project will benefit my students in a variety of ways. First iPads will transform the way students learn. They will have a powerful creative tool, interactive textbooks, and a universe of apps and contents that will make for endless learning possibilities in science and math. Secondly, students will use the Mindstorm Ev3 and Sphero software to design and build programmable robots using high quality motors, sensors, gears, wheels, axles, and other technical components.
These iPads will enable students to gain practical, hands-on experience using coding and mathematical concepts such as estimating and measuring distance, time and speed.
They will use them to understand and interpret two-dimensional drawings to create three-dimensional models; build, test, troubleshoot and revise designs to improve robot performance; all this will allow students to further their 21st Century skills. Thirdly, the iPads will also be used to create and display presentations for their classmates in many areas of the fourth grade curriculum.
