Can you imagine growing up in a technology rich global society but having no access to WiFi, smart phones, tablets, or computers in your home? The gap in access to technology amongst student populations is unjust. Help my students experience technology through a classroom iPad!
I am a Special Education teacher to over 25 students in Kindergarten through third grade in a low-income area with over 85% of students receiving free or reduced price lunches.
All of my students have a diagnosis of a learning disability, autism, developmental delay, or other health impairments, including: ADD/ADHD or PTSD. Students visit our resource room daily for 30-60 minutes at a time. During this short period they receive very direct, specialized instruction focused around their individual learning goals in Reading, Writing, Math, Social Skills, Behavior, or Study Skills.
Due to budget restraints, my classroom is limited to 2 computers that are nearly 10 years old! With a technology rich society, my students have limited opportunities to learn and grow with modern technology. With the donation of an iPad, my students will be given equitable opportunities to learn and grow with the updated technology.
My Project
The iPad has endless learning opportunities. I will use it to for students to practice math facts and spelling skills, research new topics, find pictures to support vocabulary development, and create slideshow presentations. I can record myself reading science and social studies texts for students to listen to when they struggle to decode such difficult texts. Using Dojo, I can integrate behavior incentives and send home daily behavior reports for families. With an iPad, I will integrate visual supports and student engagement; such as, when learning about prepositions during a writing lesson, I can import photos of above and below and have students sort them with Popplet.
There are endless opportunities to improve a teacher's productivity. With Evernote, I will take meeting notes and quickly print or email it to parents. I will collect assessment data that is easily shared with colleagues and families. I will record students reading to me and share with their parents at conferences.
Your donation will allow me to integrate the iPad into every lesson while allowing students to get hands-on with their skills during independent work time.
Students will be given the opportunity to experience technology on a daily basis. They will be prepared for competitive, technology rich careers as they practice their reading, writing, and math skills with the iPad. I am eager to see what new learning an iPad will bring to my classroom and students!
