The students at our school are ethnically diverse and many are underprivileged. Most of our students love attending school and the students on my caseload are more than willing to attend therapy sessions. Many of my students often ask "Can I come Thursday too?" or "Can you make up that session I missed?". Their willingness to learn is inspiring!
Our school has a number of students with Individual Education Plans who require specialized instruction.
Within the school, there is a wide range of student abilities and needs. Many of these students struggle with their language skills and need to attend speech and language therapy to target specific skills. In addition to working with middle school students, I also work at the neighboring elementary school in the classrooms for students with autism.
Although our school is diverse in abilities and culturally, all staff and students are accepting and respectful of the differences. This makes for a positive learning environment that is a pleasure to be a part of.
My Project
Having an iPad in my therapy room will help me to target multiple goals at the same time. Many times, I have groups of students that are each working towards a different goal. With an iPad, some students can work on the iPad with their goal while I work with other students on a different goal. In addition to being helpful for learning, an iPad will also be a very useful reinforcing tool. Reinforcement is a valuable tool for my students with autism. An iPad is a great motivator and reinforcer to have.
There are many useful iPad apps that are beneficial towards helping students to learn in a motivating way.
With my middle school students, I love teaching them how to use Quizlet. This is a free tool that they can access at home. With an iPad in my therapy room, I will be able to teach them how to use this tool so that they are able to use it at home as well. In addition, I have recently taken a course on using iPads in the classroom and would love to put some of the information I learned to good use.
