"On Wisconsin..." "GO BADGERS!" Each day that I enter the classroom, the "Wisconsin Badgers'" voices ring out as I capture their attention to start our learning. I am so proud to work with this group of third graders who show that the Badgers can SHRED it. They show self-control and are honest, . My classroom is one of three third grade classes in a charter school that serves students in grades K-12 and provides an engaging learning environment through academics and after-school activities.
With a school located in my hometown of Detroit, Michigan, my students currently face a myriad of obstacles out of their control, yet the students, their families, and myself remain determined face the challenges.
The school systems in the city of Detroit are currently changing at a furious pace, creating many difficult situations. Nonetheless, no matter the hardship, we all express a desire to continue to learn and do our very best, each and every day. Our classroom family has the spirit and drive to keep moving forward, but we need the concrete tools to make it reality.
I have an incredible class of growing mathematicians and readers who are excited to learn daily. However, their varying reading levels (ranging from first to sixth grade) and mathematics ability make it difficult to ensure that growth in learning happens for every student each day.
The truth is, some of my students are simply too high or too behind to learn from basic third grade math and reading standard, and they just get bored!
Few things are more nerve-wracking to a teacher than a classroom full of kids who are too bored to do anything, so I need your help to solve this problem. As a turnaround school in the inner-city, it may come as no surprise that we are lacking when it comes to the resources and technology that our students need in order to get them college/career ready. I am requesting iPads for my students so that they will have the resources necessary in order to be able to work on educational websites and apps like CompassLearning, Kahoot!, Epic!, and more. We also need the cases, headphones, and bookcases so that we may properly use all of these resources. Please help my scholars maintain their love for learning by putting these resources in their hands.
