This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Each day, my students have a block of independent work time where they practice writing, reading, and phonics, and another where they practice foundational math skills. The challenge during these times is keeping my busy kindergarteners engaged.
As the year continues, I have been able to watch my students' interests grow and evolve.
While this has been exciting for me, it also keeps me on my toes in order to reach all of them where they are. This is another reason it would be great to have iPads, since the range of what we can do with them is so wide. Hopefully, technology like this will help keep my students engaged and moving quickly towards their learning goals.
My Project
My students will use the iPads to do individually targeted independent work during our small group rotations. The iPads will help keep them engaged, but it will also give them exposure to technology they would not have otherwise. This exposure is especially important since the standardized tests that we take throughout the year are taken on computers, which the students get very little time with prior to testing.
iPads have recently shown to have a slight positive effect on standardized literacy scores for kindergarteners.
Not only would it give them the necessary exposure to technology, but it would help them work towards the learning goals we work so hard to reach throughout the year.
