"Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty. It should be offered to them as a precious gift." — Kate DiCamillo
I know if I can find that one book that grabs a reluctant reader's interest I can build on that and help a student become a life long lover of reading!
That is the gift I want to badly to give each and every one of my students!
I am a third grade teacher and have 17 students, half of which are reluctant readers. They have struggled for most of their school years with reading and have watched their peers progress into chapter books. Sitting next to a friend who is reading Because of Win Dixie while you are reading a much lower level "babyish" book, only increases the frustration and embarrassment.
I would like to purchase high interest, low level chapter books to address both the reluctance to read as well as the "social stigma" many of my students feel every day.
My Project
Struggling and reluctant readers often don't have access to books that are about engaging topics or characters. Because they are reading below grade level, they see the books they can read independently as "babyish." Frustration and even embarrassment create an unwillingness to read, which only adds to their struggles.
All children need high interest books that are on their independent reading level in order create a love of reading.
I have chosen books written at lower readability levels that have characters, problems and topics that my students can relate to and will be interested in. My students love mysteries! Two of the sets I would like to order are mysteries, while the others are about sports and pets.
