I am trying to help the students at Andersen Elementary School develop an "Awareness" of the world in which they live. The world for which they will be the future decision makers and leaders. Right now our students only have an "Awareness" of themselves and their local surroundings. They do not have an "Awareness" of how they are connected - not only to their local neighborhoods - but also to the rest of the world. To help the students begin to develop and understand their connection to the rest of the world and how it works, we would like to have each student have their own book to read, highlight, and mark with reader's symbols. This grant would provide the funds for two reading groups. These groups are comprised of students that are reading at an 8th grade or higher level and are in 6th through 8th grades. One class would read the book 'The World is Flat' by Thomas Friedman to develop an understanding of local and world economies. The second class would read the book 'An Inconvenient Truth' by Al Gore. The book is being read to develop an understanding that what they do right now, right here, has a profound effect on the environment. These books are not being used to influence students to any one political idea, but to develop the ability to question themselves, leaders, the government, and others. Andersen is an inner city school that serves a minority population and where 100% of the students receive free lunches. The books 'An Inconvenient Truth' and 'The World is Flat' will be read by about 50 students in grades 6th through 8th grades in their 8th grade level reading classes. The students in these reading classes are either above grade level or at grade level in reading. We are constantly trying to raise the bar for our students by preparing them for high school, college, and beyond college - for the real world. By reading the above mentioned books we are providing the students an opportunity to develop an Awareness about the world in which they are members. Hopefully creating an Awareness that will help them to become active members, rather than passive members.
