This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I want to give my kindergarten students exciting hands-on activities to ignite a real passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Children living in poverty are less likely to be given opportunities to explore STEM activities. As a result, we see a vast under representation of minorities in STEM careers.

As an early childhood educator, I believe we need to ensure children of ALL cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds have opportunities to explore, imagine, plan, and create their own solutions to everyday problems.

This project includes a large two sided standing magnetic divider/board and two engineering kits. This large two sided magnetic board allows two groups of students the vital work space to collaborate and build their own roller coaster or tunnel system. The students can keep their project in place to revisit and improve thru trial and error. (Engineers don't complete projects in just one day. It is large enough to allow the students to present their work to their peers and have their classmates try out their roller coaster or tunnel system before creating their own.

I would like to not only teach specific engineering lessons using these hands-on materials, but also give students the opportunity to lead their own investigations as I add these exciting materials to our classroom STEM Center.
